For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of Light [lead the lives of those native-born to the Light]. For the fruit (the effect, the product) of the Light or the Spirit [consists] in every form of kindly goodness, uprightness of heart, and trueness of life. Eph 5:8 AMPC
We are children of light. That is our identity. We were darkness, but, having been reborn in Christ we were made light. We are native-born to the light. Someone who is native-born to a particular country speaks in a certain way, sometimes even dances in a certain way. You get clues about where someone is from based on the language they speak or their accent. Sometimes even the way a person dresses can give you an idea of what country they’re from.
God is calling us to walk as children of Light. To let our lives speak with the accent of heaven. So that when another person is around you, they can tell where you’re from. They will know you’re from the Light. There are people who try to speak in a foreign accent, but it’s very hard to do that, especially continually. In the same way, there are many ‘good people’ on earth but it is difficult to consistently produce the fruit of the light if you aren’t native-born of the light.
When you accept Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior, you become born into His Kingdom. So He gives you an identifying seal. He gives you the Light or Spirit of God. When the Spirit of God lives in you, it moves you to behave as a citizen of the Kingdom of God and a child of Light. As you persist in prayer, reading God’s Word and worship, you begin to produce the fruit of the Light. The Holy Spirit living inside of you should affect every aspect of your life as you follow His leading. He will teach you the ways of the Kingdom of Light. As you follow His lead it becomes a natural way for you to be rather than something contrived or manufactured. Your tastes, desires, attitudes and perceptions begin to change until you are walking as a child of Light. You walk and live as one who knows God.
The Holy Spirit at work in you so changes you until it is impossible to be the same person you were. The way you speak changes. The way you give changes. The way you love and view people changes. So your life begins to have these distinguishing marks that are clear indicators that you’re different. You’re from somewhere else. Many times people hear me speak and then ask, “Where are you from?”. Sometimes they don’t know where you’re from, but they just know you’re different. You don’t sound like everyone else. These distinguishing marks in your life show up in the form of kindly goodness, uprightness of heart and trueness of life.
Kindly Goodness means showing kindness to others. Going the extra mile. Seeking the good of others. Being gentle with your words to and about people. Uprightness of Heart means to be one who is noble of heart. To have good intentions. To be motivated by God’s love rather than selfish gain. It also means one who loves justice and chooses to do the right thing even when it’s hard. Trueness of Life means that your life matches what you say you believe. Your walk matches your talk. Your actions, seen and unseen, are in line with what God wants. Your life has been shaped and transformed by the Truth of God’s Word.
So Paul is saying in this passage that you were once in darkness but now you’re reborn as children of light. So walk like it. Live like it. But don’t just do religious activity. Let the Holy Spirit really work in your heart and guide your decisions in such a way that your life produces the fruit of the Light or Spirit. Let your life be a natural expression of your new identity in Christ.
