Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]. So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, The Lord is my Helper; I will not be seized with alarm [I will not fear or dread or be terrified]. What can man do to me? Heb 13:5-6 AMPC
It is a dangerous thing to set your affections on worldly possessions and material gain. To so deeply desire money and wealth that we lose sight of the true meaning and purpose of the life we’ve been given. This scripture is calling us to be free of a mentality that cherishes money above all else. A person that holds money dear puts their hope in money. They find their worth, value and sense of security in money rather that in God. It is a form of idolatry to put your hope in anything but Jesus. When we give any person or thing the highest place in our hearts, we have replaced Jesus with a lifeless, useless god that is bound to fail you and certainly incapable of loving you.
We often place our hope in money because we are afraid. Afraid that we won’t have enough one day to provide for ourselves or those we love. This is a legitimate concern in our economic climate. But we must be careful not to allow fear to pervert the desire to provide into greed and craving for money. This can be a very subtle transition until one day gaining wealth is all you think about. It is impossible to be happy in the life you have if your heart is set on money. If your deepest desire is material wealth. If that is what you crave most in this life, you will never be satisfied. You will always be afraid – either to lose your money or that you won’t have enough.
This is why God in His mercy, follows the warning to guard against the craving for money with words of comfort reminding you of His love. But also to assure you that you can trust Him. God is very specific in saying He will not in any way, in any degree leave you without support. He promises to never abandon you or let you down. He declares that He will never let you go!
These are assurances that money cannot provide. No person or thing can be that for you – the absolute guarantor of your future. We are only completely safe and cared for in the way that is best for us in the arms of the Father. There is no other safe place but in Him.
When fear starts to creep in and tries to turn your heart towards anything other than Jesus, be reminded of the Lord’s words to you. Be reminded of His promise. Repeat it out loud until you believe it. Until it is written on the tablet of your heart. When your hope is set firmly in the Lord, it removes power from people and circumstances to affect your inner peace. If you know nothing else today, know that you have the support of the One who will never fail you. The One who will never, not even in the slightest way, leave you without help. The God of the Universe – the Omnipotent and Loving Father is your help and your only hope. May your heart rest in the truth today.
Love & Blessings,
