11 Now the [a]Angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak (terebinth) at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, and his son Gideon was beating wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. 12 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The Lord is with you, you mighty man of [fearless] courage. 13 And Gideon said to him, O sir, if the Lord is with us, why is all this befallen us? And where are all His wondrous works of which our fathers told us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian. 14 The Lord turned to him and said, Go in this your might, and you shall save Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you? 15 Gideon said to Him, Oh Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Behold, my clan is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house. Judges 6:11-15 AMPC
The Bible says the Angel of the Lord came and sat under an oak tree before talking to Gideon. There are angels around us. The angel observed Gideon as he was trying to hide wheat from the Mideonites. Yet in the midst of Gideon’s hiding, the angel addressed him not as he was, but as the person God intended him to be. The Angel could see that this was not where Gideon would end up. That this wasn’t the end of Gideon’s story. That though he was timid and hiding… Though he questioned God and needed sign after sign to be sure of what God had told him… Though his first act of obedience to God would take place under the cloak of night because he was too afraid – afraid of his father’s servants, the people in his home and in his town… Despite all that, the angel addressed Gideon as a ‘mighty man of fearless courage’!
God doesn’t view us based on our current situation. He doesn’t call us based on how we look on the outside. Gideon was painfully aware that he was the most insignificant person in the poorest family and God chose to use him. Even though Gideon was afraid, God knew what was inside him. He knew Gideon’s potential. God knit him together in his mother’s womb as a MIGHTY MAN OF FEARLESS COURAGE. So that’s who Gideon really was under all the fear and insecurity. But life and circumstances caused Gideon to view himself as nothing and to operate below his potential…outside of his purpose.
God was patient with Gideon. He took the time to give him all the signs he asked for and assured him he was capable. “Go forth in this your might…have I not sent you?”, God would say. “Surely I will be with you”, God would tell him. And still Gideon doubted. But God was relentless in His desire to see Gideon be all he was made to be. To see all the gifts He had placed inside of him be unearthed.
God will not give up on you. You may feel like the lowest of the low. Like an insignificant nothing whose presence doesn’t matter. But there are angels with you and God sees you. He will use you. He will fill you with strength and help you to see yourself as He sees you. Even in your doubt He is with you. He sees your circumstances. He knows you’re the unlikely candidate by man’s standards. But He will use you just as He planned when He made you. He will accomplish more through you than you ever thought possible. He will patiently help you to see the greatness in yourself so you can be all He made you to be.
Love & Blessings,
