Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer and Mediator of that will]. 1 Thess 5:18
They are also to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at evening. 1 Chron 23:30
For those who are in Christ, there is no circumstance that warrants hopelessness and complaining. We already have the ultimate gift of being in Christ and all the benefits of that. We’ve been given right standing with God so that we can enjoy relationship with Him. Nothing else compares to that! It is God’s will for us to give Him praise. To thank Him IN EVERYTHING. We already know that He works all things together for our good. So that means we know the outcome of everything we experience will always be in our favor, for our benefit and God’s glory. Knowing this – really knowing this ahead of time prepares our hearts to be grateful no matter our situation.
The reference to ‘they’ in the scripture above speaks of the Levites. Levi was the priestly tribe – they tended to all the temple activities. They were tasked with performing holy service in the Tabernacle of the desert and in the Temple. They were chosen for the highest spiritual service among the Israelites. Just think – if we chose to give God thanks and praise every morning and every evening, we would be walking the same path as holy men from centuries ago.
I believe God is saying that gratitude is a holy posture and thanksgiving, a holy activity. As we choose to encapsulate our day in gratitude and thanks, God is made to sit on the throne of our lives. He becomes elevated as the most important thing, above all our problems, circumstances and needs. Our focus is shifted to His faithfulness and the absolute goodness of His character. The truth that GOD IS GOOD, the truth of His love and mercy become a banner over every circumstance that we face.
