37 And He replied to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (intellect). 38 This is the great (most important, principal) and first commandment. Matt 22 : 37-38 AMPC
God wants us to love Him with our whole selves. With all that we are and have, He wants us to love Him. It is the only fitting response to a love so unimaginably deep and unconditional.
The scripture says the most important commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. There is no other way to truly live the life God has called us to. It’s impossible if we are not motivated by His love in us and for us and by our love for Him. The way we view God affects everything else in our lives. In many ways, it determines the way we live.
As our love for God grows, our obedience and yieldedness follows. So we become able to love who He loves – even those most unlovely ones. He causes us to see them through His eyes. Not to see their flaws but their potential, and sometimes to see the brokenness they suffered that led them to hurt us. Love for God and love for people are inseparable. People are the objects of His love…each one lovingly formed by Him.
When there is nothing we want more than God, then, we have everything. All our desires and affections should be towards Him.
Loving the Lord in this way, is borne of recognizing the immense grace and mercy He showed us. The humbling realization that there is nothing we could do to earn the Father’s love, and therefore, absolutely nothing we could do to lose it. It engenders in us a new way to love others…a more excellent way. A love that is fearless, generous and compassionate.
