From Servant to Friend

When we faithfully serve the Lord, showing our love through obedience, He no longer call us servants, but friends.

On the go? Press play!

In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome  1 John 5:3-4 NIV

14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.  Jon 15:14-15 NIV

Love for God, obeys God and therefore love serves.  We are told to serve from hearts of love.  But what does this mean?  The scriptures tell us that our love for God is shown through obedience.  God commands us to serve each other.  Therefore if we love God, we’ll serve others.

Love moves us to serve in the true sense of the word.  Love for God brings obedience in service. In the scriptures, Jesus calls those who love and obey Him, friends.  He said, “I no longer call you servants…”.  That means there is a transition from servant to friend in our relationship with Jesus.  Jesus explains that the servant is one who does not know or understand the master’s business.  When we faithfully serve the Lord, showing our love through obedience, He begins to reveal more about the missions He gives us.  He reveals His heart for our cities and our nations and the part He wants us to play in restoring them to Himself.  Our hearts begin to mirror His heart and we begin to feel deeper compassion for the lost.  At the place of friendship with Jesus, we enter into a new fullness of relationship with Him.  He gives us insight into His instructions.  His will becomes our hearts’ deepest desire.  Through love displayed in obedience, our hearts become knitted with Jesus in the ministry of reconciliation.  We find fulfillment in using our gifts to glorify God and minister healing to a broken and dying world.  May we all come to the place of friendship with Jesus.  What a wonderful thing to be called His friend!

Let’s pray this prayer together:

Father thank you for loving us enough to call us to into relationship with You.  That fact alone is too wonderful for us to fully fathom!  We love You and so we seek to obey You.  We are beyond grateful for Your love and grace, so we serve.  We long for You to reveal to us Your heart for Your people.  For our hearts to be knitted with Yours in reconciling Your beloved to Yourself.  Thank You that through faith in Jesus, we can experience friendship with You.  Moved by Your Holy Spirit to expand Your Kingdom and bring You glory.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Love & Blessings,

Less Trodden
