Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 NIV
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32 NIV
Followers of Jesus are called to be different. But so many of us are unaware of our worth and value in Christ. We accept the labels people put on us instead of looking to the Word to see what God has said about us. We often look to the world around us for validation. We crave ‘likes’ and followers on social media to feel approved of. To feel worthy. We look to the world to tell us who we are instead of the One who made us. In order to keep the approval of the world, we must blend in. Comply with the standards set by society. Fit into the mold that the world has made.
Each one of us was formed and fashioned uniquely by God. Created and designed with a purpose in mind. Filled with gifts to be used to be a blessing to the world and to honor God. What a dishonor to God’s creative process when we simply conform. When we choose the status quo over God’s unique calling on our lives. When we lay ourselves on the world’s conveyor belt to be processed and deemed acceptable.
The scripture is telling us that it must be our intention to be different. To stop thinking the thoughts that are fed to us by media and popular culture. Instead of being conformed, God calls us to be transformed. Transformation begins in the mind and then make its way to our hearts. We’re constantly being told what to think. What to think is beautiful, what true success looks like, what will make us happy. We are constantly exposed to world views that are contrary to God’s Word. So the only way to renew our minds – to reset them – to think in alignment with God’s standards, is to read God’s Word. The Word refreshes and reboots our minds. Gives us a God perspective of life. Helps us to be able to discern what is pleasing to God.
The more we read God’s Word is the more we become acquainted with His heart and character. In the same way that the more time you spend with someone, the more you know what they like. The more you understand the way they think. Though we can never presume to understand God’s ways, the Bible soaks our minds in the truth so that we’re able to see the lies more easily. The lies we believe about ourselves. That we’re not good enough, not smart enough, not beautiful, not loved. When we know the truth, we no longer feel bound by the world’s approval. The only way to know the truth is to read it. Over and over. To meditate on it. To study it. As we read God’s Word, the Holy Spirit leads us into the full and complete truth. The truth about ourselves. The truth about what is good. And by knowing the truth, we are set free. Free to rip the world’s pattern, to break the world’s mold, to think outside the world’s box. Free to be the unique expression of God that He planned from the very start. Free to do His will, which is where true fulfillment lies.
