26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8: 26-27 NIV
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Matthew 6:7 NIV
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7b NIV
Many of us are intimidated by the idea of praying. Even in private. Just the thought of talking to God who’s ‘way up there’ causes many people to shy away from praying altogether. Some of us feel like we’re not worthy to talk to God. Some of us feel like we won’t have the right words. That we won’t pray as eloquently as ‘so-and-so’ who seems so holy and close to God. Some of us think our prayers are too simple. That we don’t have enough to say to God.
I love that God isn’t like us. He isn’t impressed by the things we look at in awe. And He doesn’t judge and look down on the things we do. He isn’t swayed by outward appearances. God is concerned with our hearts. The great thing about talking to God is that He can see our hearts. So even if we can’t express ourselves clearly, He understands. Prayer is just talking to God. And if He already knows what we’re thinking, why should we pray? To build intimacy with God. To remind us that He’s with us every moment of every day. The more you talk to someone, the closer you feel to them. The more you feel at liberty to say and to share what’s on your heart. God is after a relationship with His children. He wants to connect with us heart to heart. For us to feel safe with Him. Safe enough to say exactly what we’re feeling. Even if the words are jumbled.
A good human father doesn’t reject a baby’s efforts to communicate with him. Even if it comes out as a few unclear syllables, fathers find great joy in the fact that their children try to to speak to them. And good fathers will help their children learn to speak. God doesn’t reject even the simplest prayers. He delights in us. He is filled with joy every time we seek Him in prayer. God loves it when we talk to Him no matter how foolish we think we sound.
Like any good Father, God helps us in our weakness. Even in the times when we don’t know what to pray. God gives us help through the Holy Spirit. When we don’t know what to pray, it’s no reason to panic or give up on talking to God. God lovingly assures us in His Word that He knows our hearts and that the Holy Spirit prays for us according to His will. What a comfort to know that God has made provisions for all our weaknesses and flaws. Even in prayer. Today, let’s enjoy talking to God through prayer. Making it a regular part of our lives. Knowing that He loves us and enjoys every time His children talk to Him.
Love & Blessings,
