The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18 NLT
Small talk can be exhausting for most people. Surface interactions can sometimes feel draining and inauthentic. It robs us of real connection with other people. We talk about things that don’t really matter. Sometimes we even portray ourselves as happier than we really are. Making it seem like everything is OK. When deep down we long to know others and to be known as we truly are.
Many of us don’t share our true selves because we’re afraid that if people really knew us, they’d push us away. We’re petrified that if people knew the ugly parts of us, they’d go running for the hills. The truth is that not everyone can handle knowing our flaws. Some people are turned off by the fact that we’re not perfect. But there is One who isn’t put off by our past. God knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows all our flaws and weaknesses. He’s heard every ugly thought we’ve ever had. Seen every awful thing we’ve done. And He loves us anyway.
God promises not to leave us when we’re less than lovely. He promises not to run away from our mess. He assures us in His Word that He comes close to all who call on Him. He isn’t turned off by our need. In fact, He wants us to come before Him declaring desperate need for Him. That’s what it means to call on Him in truth. We come before God declaring the truth. The truth that we are weak, but He is strong. That we are poor in spirit, but He is rich. That we’ve made a mess of things trying to go our own way, and that we need Him to rescue us.
The only way to be truly close to anyone is to be vulnerable. Closeness isn’t achieved through walls. God is calling us to remove the masks. To tear down the walls of self-dependence. To leave our worthless idols behind. God wants us to be real with Him about where we are. To be truthful about what we’re feeling. To be honest with our pain and insecurity. He promises not to run away, but to come close. To come close and to heal us in His presence.
